Flat, Eggshell, Satin or Semi-Gloss? A Room-by-Room Sheen Guide

Quick answer: The higher the sheen, the more durable and washable the surface — and the more it highlights every flaw in the wall. Flat for ceilings, eggshell for living spaces, satin for hardworking rooms, semi-gloss for trim, doors, kitchens and baths.

The one rule that explains everything

Sheen is a trade-off: durability versus forgiveness. Glossier finishes shrug off scrubbing and moisture but telegraph every patch, ripple and roller mark. Flatter finishes hide imperfections beautifully but mark easier. Every room is a different balance of those two needs.

Ceilings: flat

Nobody scrubs a ceiling, and raking light across a glossy one reveals every seam. Flat, always.

Living rooms and bedrooms: eggshell

The workhorse of interior painting — a soft, low glow that’s washable enough for everyday life and forgiving on big wall surfaces.

Hallways, kids’ rooms and high-traffic areas: satin

Fingerprints, backpacks, dog tails. Satin cleans up with a damp cloth and takes the abuse without wearing through.

Kitchens and bathrooms: satin to semi-gloss

Steam, grease and splashes call for a surface that moisture can’t soak into and a sponge can’t damage.

Trim, doors and cabinets: semi-gloss

Trim takes the most contact of any painted surface, and the crisp light-catch of semi-gloss is what makes millwork look finished. Cabinets deserve their own conversation — see our sprayed cabinet finishes.

A note on exteriors

Central Oregon’s intense UV fades glossy exteriors faster. We typically recommend low-lustre or satin for siding — durable, fade-resistant, and kind to imperfect siding — with semi-gloss reserved for doors and trim. More on our approach to exterior painting.
