Licensed vs. Unlicensed Painters: Why the CCB Number Matters in Oregon

Quick answer: An Oregon CCB license means a contractor is bonded, insured and accountable to the state. Hiring unlicensed means no bond to claim against, possible liability if a worker is hurt on your property, and no recourse when the job goes wrong.

What a CCB license actually is

The Oregon Construction Contractors Board requires every contractor to register, carry a surety bond, and hold liability insurance. It exists for one reason: homeowners kept getting burned. The license number on a contractor’s quote — ours is CCB #254200 — is your proof those protections exist.

What it protects you from

  • Bad work with no recourse — if a licensed contractor’s work fails, you can file a complaint with the CCB and claim against their bond. With an unlicensed painter, your options are small claims court and hope.
  • Injury liability — if an uninsured worker falls off a ladder at your home, you may be the one paying. Licensed contractors carry the insurance that keeps that risk off your homeowner’s policy.
  • Property damage — overspray on your neighbor’s car, a cracked window, a stained roof: insurance covers it. No insurance, no coverage.

How to verify a license in 30 seconds

Go to the CCB’s license search at search.ccb.state.or.us, type in the number, and check that it’s active, bonded and insured. Any contractor who won’t give you their number has answered your real question already.

Red flags that usually travel together

Cash-only pricing, no written quote, pressure to decide today, and no license number on the paperwork. Unlicensed operators are cheaper for a reason — they’ve skipped the costs that protect you.

The bottom line

The license doesn’t guarantee great work — that’s what reviews, completed projects and good questions are for. But it guarantees accountability. Never hire without it. Get a free estimate from a licensed, insured local crew.
