When DIY Painting Makes Sense — and When It’ll Cost You

Quick answer: Paint your own bedroom, accent wall or fence — sincerely, go for it. Think hard before DIY-ing full exteriors, cabinets, ceilings and anything involving tall ladders or serious prep. The projects that punish mistakes are the ones worth hiring out.

Yes, we’re painters telling you to DIY some things

A single bedroom with good walls, low ceilings and time to spare is a genuinely satisfying weekend project. So is a garden fence or a small deck rail. If it’s low, dry, indoors or forgiving, and you enjoy the work — do it yourself and be proud of it.

Where DIY starts costing more than it saves

  • Full exteriors — height, weather timing, and hours of prep most homeowners understandably skip. A failed exterior job doesn’t just look bad; it lets moisture at your siding, and redoing it means paying for the job twice.
  • Cabinets — brush-painted cabinets rarely survive kitchen life. A durable, factory-smooth result takes degreasing, sanding, bonding primer and sprayed application. This is the project we’re most often called to rescue.
  • Ceilings and stairwells — awkward, drippy, hard on the body, and lap marks show under every light.
  • Repairs first — peeling paint, cracks and water stains have causes. Painting over them is gift-wrapping a problem.

The honest math of a DIY weekend

Count the real costs: quality paint, primer, brushes, rollers, tape, drop cloths, a decent ladder — then the weekends. Pros carry better tools, buy better paint, and have done your exact house layout hundreds of times. The gap between DIY cost and a professional quote is usually smaller than homeowners expect, and the finish gap is bigger.

A fair test

If a mistake would be annoying, DIY. If a mistake would be expensive — height, moisture, cabinetry, resale — get a pro. And if you’re not sure which side your project lands on, a free estimate costs nothing and settles it. We’ll tell you honestly if it’s a job you can handle yourself — it’s happened plenty.
